Cassette Pawl Repair

Start Here :)

Play this song while reading this blog....

Kassem says: Temple of the DOG...  has a significance to this bike repair as we are repairing the "DOGS".

Mr.G asks: What are the "DOGS"?

Kassem says: The "DOGS" are really called "Pawls" and they are part of the ratchet action in the freewheel.  Its what makes your bike go forward. I am going to show you how they work.

This is the beginning of the process of repairing the "DOGGIES" aka Pawls.
You take the wheel apart with a tool called "FR-7" aka Freewheel Remover.

here is the Freewheel Remover.

Sandblasting the Gear.

I Sandblasted half of the gear to show the difference, its a kind of hard to see!

Now since I finished the sandblasting and it looks brand new we open it up and it turned out it was         rusted in the inside, so we took the Doggies out and sand blasted them in a crazy way take a look!!!

I got the idea of a water bottle and drilled a little hole in it for the air to come out but the not big enough         for the Doggie to come out.
And then reinforced it with tape.

Take a look inside!

Then we attached a magnet to it, to give it more weight and keep it from moving as much as possible

There we are the idea worked perfectly !!!!

    That was great!

We used the buffer Wheel to make it shiny. Who doesn't like shiny stuff!! :D

That was almost the final product. Afterwards I put everything in "mineral spirits" its a cleaning chemical...

I also cleaned the Ball Bearings. They allow the gear to turn.
    they were really nasty!

As you can see the top doggie was the rusted dirty doggie, and the bottom one was after the cleaning           process.

And finally we added new grease to the gears and put it all back together .
Top grease for the Ball Bearings =D
And finally I closed it and finished the Pawls repair...

Currently I am seeking a career in Engineering.  If you have an opening or would just like to talk about more of this project, please contact me.  Phone: +1(201)328-2912  Email: kemma11@hotmail.com
